THE STORY OF HISTORICAL COSTUME DESIGN

So much more than a well-constructed garment. A way of bringing back the past to life and being part of the conversations that happened once upon a time.

Historical Costume Design is the creative process of researching and designing clothing that either replicates or resembles clothing from past eras. These costumes are designed to support historical events or scripts, making them very important to theater, film, museums, reenactment groups, or anyone who has a love of history and/or fashion.

ABOUT KELLY MANN

FOUNDER OF SEWISTORICAL

Imagine a world where people feel supported, championed, and seen. One where creative passions are seen as a gift, one that is enjoyed and celebrated with others. That is the vision that Kelly Mann has for the future of sewing education.

Kelly is a Costume Designer (MFA) and Fashion Historian specializing in 18th, 19th and early 20th century historical fashions. With a MLitt in Dress & Textiles History from the University of Glasgow, Kelly researches, designs and creates historical costumes and accessories for individuals and museums.

With over 6 years of experience researching, designing and building costumes, Kelly has had the opportunity to work with some notable clients including The Tate House in Maine and James Madison’s Montpelier Museum in Virginia.

Kelly specializes in historical and fantasy costume design, taking on projects from conceptualization all the way to final construction. Her costume design services often include script breakdown, character breakdown, collaboration with artistic team, sketches, and final renderings.

When she is not diligently stitching her next costume for a client or sharing her deep knowledge with her students, Kelly can be found cuddling with her three toy poodles in her home at New Hampshire, sipping hot tea.
