Thumri
Expressive Classical Vocal Form

Course Overview

Thumri is a refined classical vocal form that emphasizes emotional nuance, lyrical sensitivity, and expressive phrasing within a disciplined musical framework. This course explores thumri as a sophisticated art form grounded in classical training rather than light or casual expression.

Study focuses on cultivating subtlety, restraint, and depth—developing the ability to convey emotion through controlled melodic movement, ornamentation, and careful attention to text. The course supports singers in refining expressive capacity while remaining rooted in classical vocal discipline.

Thumri study complements foundational rāga training, offering students a pathway into expressive classical interpretation without departing from rigor or form.

Live Class 1 — Thumri Form and Expression
This session introduces thumri as a classical expressive form, focusing on its musical structure, emotional character, and stylistic features. Attention is given to how melody, text, and mood work together, and to what distinguishes thumri from other classical forms while remaining rooted in tradition.

Live Class 2 — Practical Vocal Development
Building on this foundation, this session focuses on practical vocal singing. Students observe how thumri is rendered with attention to phrasing, ornamentation, and emotional nuance, while maintaining classical discipline. Emphasis is placed on voice control, melodic movement, and expressive clarity.

Live Class 3 — Composition and Rhythm
Using the same thumri explored in the earlier sessions, this class examines how melody and text are presented within rhythm. Students observe how phrasing and timing interact with tāla, and how expressive freedom is shaped by structure and rhythmic awareness.
