Rāga
Foundational Classical Vocal Training
Course Overview
The Rāga program forms the technical and conceptual foundation of classical vocal music. It is designed to cultivate a stable, responsive voice while developing a deep understanding of rāga as a living melodic framework.
Study focuses on voice culture, tonal clarity, and disciplined improvisation, guiding students toward a grounded and expressive relationship with classical form. Rather than emphasizing speed or accumulation of material, the course prioritizes depth, repetition, and attentive listening.
This program serves as both an entry point for serious students and a refining practice for those seeking to strengthen their classical foundation.

Raga— Live Zoom Classes
Three live Zoom classes form a core component of the Rāga program, allowing students to observe, understand, and internalize classical rāga practice through guided instruction and demonstration.
Live Class 1 — Rāga Theory and Structure
This session introduces the rāga through clear explanation of its structure, characteristic phrases, and overall melodic shape. The focus is on understanding the rāga’s identity and inner logic before moving into vocal practice.
Live Class 2 — Practical Vocal Development
Building on this foundation, the session focuses on vocal application through ālāp and classical khayāl-style singing. Attention is given to voice placement, intonation, phrasing, and disciplined improvisation within the rāga.
Live Class 3 — Composition and Rhythm
Using the same rāga explored in the earlier sessions, this class introduces composition and bandish within a rhythmic framework. Students observe how melody, rhythm, and structure come together in classical performance.
Together, these sessions guide students from conceptual understanding to embodied vocal practice.
