The term "Thumri" is derived from the Hindi verb thumakna which means "to walk with dancing steps so as to make the ankle-bell tinkle.

This is a Semi Classical , romantic lyrical form of classical music with a sweet sad feel of love. Often performed with classical dance including Kathak and Is especially popular in Banaras or Lucknow
