Max is a 10-year-old fourth grader, who is a bit of a puzzle to his parents and teachers. Despite being conscientious and hardworking, Max often stops and loses his place when doing classwork. He struggles to self-correct, organize himself, complete tasks and despite adequate hearing, he struggles to follow instructions.
When reading, he struggles to identify the main idea and often forgets key parts of the story. He regularly makes careless mistakes, when counting and writing. He has difficulty with mental math, and still uses his fingers to do simple calculations. He finds complex problem solving difficult and often asks his teacher to repeat what she has said. As Max progresses into Grade 4, everything seems to be falling apart.
1 in 10 students struggle with WORKING MEMORY difficulties!
WORKING MEMORY is one of the most critical underlying foundation skills. It forms the foundation for adequate cognitive development and is essential for planning, comprehension, reasoning and problem-solving. It involves the complex integration of many cognitive functions and is one of the few skills that are necessary for almost every aspect of learning and academic success.
And OFTEN….
WORKING MEMORY is the surprising culprit that lurks undetected, influencing and exacerbating so many of the learning challenges we usually see. However, it is often sidelined in diagnosis and rarely incorporated into treatment plans.
This has significant implications for learning.
